Nova Scotia community revitalizes historic harbourfront
February 17, 2021

Rural businesses and regional tourism activities have been particularly hard-hit by the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Improving and promoting unique local attractions helps strengthen rural communities by creating and protecting jobs, boosting local tourism revenue and positioning the tourism sector to come back strong when the pandemic is over. In Kings County, the Scott’s Bay Wilderness Society is enhancing its tourism offerings and creating new ones so the rural seaside community will be ready to welcome visitors once it is safe to do so.

Government invests in wilderness destination and historic harbour

Today, Kody Blois, Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, announced a non-repayable contribution of $380,000 to the Scott’s Bay Wilderness Society for a harbour revitalization project.

The project includes upgrades to the current wharf and breakwater, and the installation of a new floating dock system. The improved infrastructure will be more accessible to recreational boaters, fishers and emergency services, which will help attract more long-term, seasonal and day users to the harbour. A new welcome centre and interpretive signs will promote local cultural and tourism activities on the community’s history, environment and geography.

Investments in tourism projects like this one further demonstrate the Government of Canada’s dedication to the continued growth and recovery of the tourism industry in rural communities throughout the region.

“Before the pandemic, the unique tourism experiences offered in Canada’s rural communities were an essential part of local economies. Our government is investing in tourism infrastructure now to help strengthen this key sector, protect jobs, create new opportunitites for growth and ensure communities are positioned to come out of this pandemic as strong as possible.”
-   The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA

“Scots Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the world and the harbour revitalization project will offer new recreational opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors to benefit from the area’s rich history and magnificent natural landscapes. I know the tremendous work the Wilderness Society has put in over the years to make this project a reality and I am pleased to see our government partnering and investing in communities like Scots Bay.”
- Kody Blois, Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants

“The Kings Region is blessed to have strong, vibrant communities. Scots Bay is one. There is a justified pride of place in which citizens invest time, money and love of community every day. It is no wonder that visitors come here to enjoy the people and the natural environment that surrounds them. We express our thanks to those who have worked so hard to achieve this important milestone – and to our federal and provincial partners for their valued support in this initiative.”
- Peter Muttart, Mayor, Municipality of the County of Kings

"We are so grateful to see the many years of hard work by community members supported by all three levels of government with this project. The revitalization of the harbour will create opportunities for the community and local businesses and enhance the tourist experience in the area. We're proud to share the history and culture of this small coastal community, and honoured to support the important work of search and rescue efforts with a safe harbour when needed."
- Jerry Huntley, Chair, Scott’s Bay Wilderness Society
